Karaoke Night

My father-in-law has just returned from Vietnam, bearing an unexpected gift - a pic of me at the karaoke night I hosted for all the employees at Salon Kien Nguyen. Thank God no pics of me actually singing or dancing.
It was an eventful night. Two of the people were having a romantic tiff, which ended in a motorcycle accident, a streetfight and a kidnapping. Just another Saigon night.
Phuoc, the man in front, had just had a rose tattooed on his elbow to commemorate his divorce.

Inner West Courier: Newtown Festival

Chance to hear writers speak volumes at Newtown Festival
Inner West Courier, 11th November 2010

STORIES from across the globe are being shared at the Newtown Festival’s Writers’ Tent this Sunday.

Presented by Newtown book store Better Read Than Dead, speakers will be discussing fiction, crime, social responsibilities, the world and politics.

Organiser Derek Dryden said they’re back for the seventh year as it’s the shop’s literary gift to the readers of Newtown.

“There’s authors to make you think, authors who will amuse you and plenty of authors who will simply entertain, but most of all it’s fun,” he said.

“It’s not the Miles Franklin or the Premier’s Literary Awards, it’s a group of authors having a fun day out at a great festival.”

Cabramatta travel writer Walter Mason will be in conversation with his publisher Maggie Hamilton at the tent about his latest book Destination Saigon.

“It’s very prestigious and it’s a tremendous privilege (to be part of the festival) as an author as Newtown is my readership,” he said.

Mason spent four months travelling from the south to the north of Vietnam to see the countryside, discover religions, and experience the culture and humanity of the people.

“I fell in love with it the first time I went there in ‘94 and have been back 11 times in 16 years,” he said.

Mason said the book is about friendships more than travelling and the experience of the people.

He said one of his favourite experiences was visiting a friend, who is a monk, who took him to stay at a temple on an ocean cliff. “Every night, with his fisherman friends, they would say a prayer for me and the people of Australia,” he said.

“I thought that was such an amazing gesture because they didn’t know me, they didn’t have too, but I felt so included.”

Mason will not only speaking about Destination Saigon, but will also be speaking about the writing process for all budding authors in the audience.

Mason said he’s looking forward to seeing the two speakers he has been placed between, Geesche Jacobsen speaking about crime and political commentator Annabel Crabb.

Mason will fly to Cambodia in a couple of weeks to start a new adventure and write his second travel book.

Message from a best-seller
Fairfield Champion,
2 June 2001

CANLEY Vale author Walter Mason has one message for aspiring writers in Fairfield and that is for them to pursue their own adventure.

Hot of the heels of his runaway successful first novel Destination Saigon: Adventures in Vietnam Mason, 39, is in town to catch up with the literary community with a talk at the Whitlam Library in Cabramatta next Wednesday, June 9.

``Hopefully, I can encourage people to pursue their own adventures and undertake their own journeys,'' said Mason, whose debut novel went into reprint on the first week of its release.

``We all have so much to learn, so many friends to make. Every day should be an adventure, whether we are stuck at home or are halfway across the world.''

Mason will return to Vietnam in November to write his second travel adventure in Asia. He said it would deal with themes of Buddhism, spirituality and personal connection.

Mason's tips for young authors:

1.You don't have to be perfect just write. Put pen to paper and don't worry about how wonderful it is. You can always fix it and change it later.

2. Read as much as you write. All writers read, and you especially need to stay up to date with writing in your own creative field.

3. Move in a writers' milieu. Find a writing group, even if it's online. Do writing courses, attend writers' festivals and listen to podcasts.

4. Find your niche. This is the modern variation of ``Write what you know''. The more you know about a subject, the better your writing will be.

5.Blog. Start writing and publish your writing online. It is free, it is easy, and it is amazing how many authors have been discovered this way.

Walter Mason will give a talk at the Whitlam Library on Wednesday, June 9, at 6.30pm. He will holding a travel writing workshop at the Liverpool Writers' Festival.

Self as Narrator, Self as Hero

One of the peculiarities of travel writing is that normally the central character of the narrator - the hero, if you like - is the writer himself.
I am talking here about the unnamed narrator of Destination Saigon, called variously, Big Brother, Fatty, Sir and – my favourite – Dumpling Face. He’s lazy, and disinclined to indulge in physical exercise – and there's something I recognise in that. He could be accused of being a religious maniac, except he’s never seen a religious person or religious act that he couldn’t poke fun at. There’s an inability to be serious, perhaps even a fear of the grave (and I leave the meaning of that statement intentionally unclear).
This character – this other Walter Mason – is also a big man, and I share this quality with him. The Vietnamese have the great charm of normally being completely honest and up-front. Being among them is like being in that awful film where no-one knows how to tell lies. Any faults, any physical differences, are immediately assessed and brought to the fore. My thesis is that this is a result of centuries lived in a communal culture in frequently crowded conditions. If everyone were to go about pretending not to notice things – the way we do – then society probably couldn’t function. People will introduce you to their family with such descriptions as “This is Sister Two – she’s retarded. Sister Three here is the great beauty of the family, but unfortunately that got used up by the time Sister Four came around – she’s extremely plain.” All this said not just in hearing distance of the said sisters, but in front of their faces. It might seem cruel, but after a while it is immensely liberating. You have no need to worry about what people are saying behind your back – because they are saying it in front of your back. If that makes sense.
And so my bigness is one of the badges I carry in Vietnam.
